Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
